Is sleep difficult for you? Do you find yourself awake late at night? If sleep (or lack of it) has become a concern for you, you might have heard of ZzzQuil. In this ZzzQuil review, we take a closer look at this product which is advertised as the solution for a poor night’s sleep.
What is ZzzQuil?
ZzzQuil is an over-the-counter sleep aid that is intended for relief of occasional sleeplessness. It’s from Procter and Gamble, the same company behind Vick’s cough and cold medicine. Interestingly, this is the very first product from Vicks that is not intended for treatment of cough and cold.
It comes in both liquid and LiquiCap form. It is intended for use in adults and children who are at least 12 years old. Aside from helping people sleep faster and longer, ZzzQuil also helps them wake up rested and refreshed.
How Does ZzzQuil Work?
It contains the active ingredient, diphenhydramine HCI, an anti-histamine that primarily used for coughs and colds.
As a sleeping aid, the said ingredient helps you sleep by blocking the effects of histamine, a naturally occurring substance that interacts with the brain receptors and which keep you awake. By blocking the histamine, diphenhydramine induces sleep.
It should be noted that Procter and Gamble advertises ZzzQuil as a solution to occasional sleeplessness. This means you should never use it regularly. If you continue to have sleepless nights two weeks after you first took this medication, stop using it and consult a doctor. Insomnia may be a symptom of a more serious, underlying medical illness.
How to Use It?
As mentioned earlier, ZzzQuil is available in two forms—the liquid and liquidcap. If you are to take the former, you will have to take two tablespoons at bedtime or as directed by a doctor. If you bought the latter, you need to take two liquicaps at bedtime.
After taking the medication, store it at room temperature at 20 to 25 degrees Celsius. Avoid exposure to excessive heat, or above 40 degrees, as well as direct sunlight.
No matter which form of ZzzQuil that you use, don’t take more than one dose in a period of 24 hours. You should never take it in the middle of the night as well.
Are There Side Effects?
The main ingredient of ZzzQuil is known to cause the following side effects::
- Loss of coordination
- Dry mouth/nose/throat
- Dry Eyes/Blurred vision
- Daytime drowsiness
Stop using the medication and seek medical help immediately if you notice the following serious ZzzQuil side effects:
- Pounding heartbeats
- Painful urination
- No urination
- Tightness in the jaw or neck
- Uncontrollable tongue movements
You should never use ZzzQuil in combination with another Vicks product, NyQuil. Doing so can only increase the risks of side effects. NyQuil also contains an antihistamine, and taking it with ZzzQuil can cause extreme drowsiness.
What Are Its Pros?
Obviously, one of the advantages that ZzzQuil has over other over the counter sleeping pills is the reputation of its maker.
Procter & Gamble (P&G) is one of the largest companies in the world, with products ranging from supplements to cleaning supplies. It has assets of more than $140 billion and is listed as one of the top global companies by the prestigious Fortune magazine.
The Better Business Bureau gives the company an A+ rating, and P&G has been able to promptly and adequately respond to customer complaints totaling more than 200 over the past three years.
The product is sold in many stores, from traditional retail stores to online stores like Amazon.com and Ebay. However, the manufacturers don’t sell the product directly on their site. There are however, links on the websites to various ZzzQuil distributors.
ZzzQuil is also not habit-forming, so there is no chance you’ll get physically addicted to this product. The manufacturer also discourages the continued use of this medication as it warns that this can increase the risks of side effects.
What Are Its Cons?
Because it only contains one active ingredient, ZzzQuil can be considered a bit pricey as a sleeping aid. It should be noted that its ingredient is commonly found in other sleeping supplements as well.
Although it comes in smaller packages, you will notice that it is more expensive when compared to other sleep supplements. For instance, 12 caps of ZzzQuil sell for around $5 on Walgreens while 24 caps sell for around $7.5.
There’s also no money back guarantee provided. But this may be due to the fact that consumers would have to pay more in shipping fees to return the product.
What Do Other Consumers Have to Say About It?
There are no studies that can prove how effective ZzzQuil is in inducing sleep, so the next best thing to determine the effectiveness of this product is to read customer reviews.
On Amazon.com, the product has a fairly high 4.4 stars rating out of a possible 5 stars. Out of the nearly 100 customer reviews, 76% gave ZzzQuil a five star rating, while 10% gave it a four star rating. Only 8 percent gave it one-star rating.
Here are some of the comments made by Amazon.com users on ZzzQuil:
“I have problems sleeping at night because of my erratic work schedule. During times when I can sense that I won’t be able to sleep fast and well, I usually take ZzzQuil. It works. I usually sleep within 30 minutes after taking this medication. And it makes me sleep for more than 7 hours.” – Andrew, 22
“I find this product very useful, especially for people like me who find it hard to sleep most of the time. My only beef with ZzzQuil. It’s too pricey!”—Michael, 33
Should You Buy It?
ZzzQuil is well-recommended by Amazon.com users, with the major complaint being the price of the product. If price is not an issue with you, and you really want to sleep fast and sound at night, then go ahead and try ZzzQuil. As you have learned from this ZzzQuil review, this is a quality supplement for occasional sleeplessness.
